Writing
In fourth grade, children build upon their earlier foundations of writing to become independent authors who can write longer, more involved pieces.
We begin the year by honing basic skills such as writing complete sentences and meaningful paragraphs. We will quickly transition to writing techniques such as combining sentences, varying sentence structure, using transitions, and crafting similes to elevate our prose. We will use the writing process for most pieces, brainstorming ideas, prewriting with a graphic organizer, writing a draft, and revising and editing to produce well-developed, rich final versions.
As the year progresses, we will work on a variety of genres: Persuasive writing, Expository writing, and Narratives. Along the way, we will also write in various other formats, such as letters and poetry.
We will also work on strengthening our spelling by exploring important patterns and our vocabulary by learning juicy words.
