Fourth grade is an exciting year – it is a truly grand transition from the primary grades. In the lower grades, students are learning to read. In fourth grade they begin reading to learn, applying multiple reading strategies they have collected over the years. In fourth grade, students expand their writing strategies to express ideas in ways which are organized, detailed, and refined. These types of changes occur across the disciplines in fourth grade, making the year both interesting and challenging.
One of the primary expectations of the middle grades is that students learn and practice strategies for organization and independence in their work. This is the time when a base of strong study habits is built. Indeed, fourth grade is a critical year to help students learn that their effort pays off and that learners “get smart” through hard work.
