We begin the year studying North American Geography, learning the location of various countries as well as their landforms. We will hone our mapping skills, becoming experts on using grids, latitude, longitude, and scale.
Native Americans
Learning about Native Americans is next. We will examine 5 to 7 cultural regions to decipher how the people who settled there adapted to their environments. How did they live in the places they chose in North America? How did they meet their basic needs?
Exploring Explorers
We continue exploring the peopling of North America by learning about the Golden Age of Exploration, when worlds and cultures collided on this continent. We will learn about the seven reasons for exploration and the positive and negative impacts of these travels.
Ourselves and our Neighbors
Did you know the United States has a lot in common with Canada and Mexico? We will compare and contrast our nation to our neighbors as we learn about the geography, government, and culture of the countries with whom we share borders, economies, and histories.
Immigration
The United States is an incredibly diverse, growing nation that has welcomed many people to its shores. Who were/are these people? Why did they come here? What pushed them from their countries or pulled them to ours? What challenges have they faced in the US? What contributions have they made to our country? We will explore these questions as we study various immigrant groups in this compelling unit.
