Differentiating instruction
Tailoring our lessons to meet every learner's needs is one of the biggest challenges of teaching. Some strategies we use in fourth grade:
- Guided Reading: We will sometimes read leveled texts in small homogenous groups. Children will be encouraged to read "just right" for independent reading. (See Reading page for information on reading levels.)
- Writing: Children will write at their own pace and will be taught many techniques individually through one-on-one conferences with a teacher. Vocabulary and spelling groups will be formed based on pretests.
- Math: For some units, we will create variable groupings for both intervention and advanced problem-solving with students working at the correct level and at their own speed when possible. These groups will be based on pretests.
- Homework: Will be varied on need when appropriate.
